Fall is in the air. We had record highs (almost 100 degrees F), but then the cold snap set in and I finally turned on the heat when the house dropped to 65. And rain, good soaking rain. Further east they had almost a foot in some places. They're at sea level and that's just not good. Here, we had about 5 inches total from 3 storms. Fall is usually dry, so this was nice after such a dry summer.

It's after the equinox and the sun is just coming up when I go down to let the chickens out. Yesterday, I thought someone's headlights were on out of the corner of my eye. No, it was the sun trying to get under the cloud cover on the horizon. Another morning, I was greeted with a red orb through the trees. This is my time of year, my imagination runs rampant.

And that means Capclave is in a few weeks. With a very big surprise. I will be reading something, a very short something, as part of the Broad Universe Rapid Fire Reading. I haven't read aloud in many, many moons. Not much call for tax accountants to do dramatic readings, is there?

Anyway, Capclave features Connie Willis and Ann and Jeff VanderMeer this year. This is going to be a lot of fun. (Next year, Catherynne Valente and Carrie Vaughn also promises to be fun.)

My schedule:
8:00 pm
Plaza II
Writers and the Internet: When is Enough Enough?
Panelists: Oz Drummond, Walter H. Hunt, Tee Morris, Karen Wester
Newton, Jeff VanderMeer, Jean Marie Ward
How much of the Internet is needed for an author to successfully
promote themselves and their works? And how much is too much?

This will be a fun panel, not least of which because my presence has dropped to mostly comments these days. But I've followed Jeff's blog for several years and I know Walter and Karen. Jean Marie is another Broad, I'll be working with her on Sat night too. And we'll all have clever things to say.

And then, I don't even leave the room for my second panel...

9:00 pm
Plaza II
Connie WIllis and Boats: what's up with this?
Panelists: Oz Drummond, Doug Fratz, Jim Freund (M), Connie Willis
Rowing up the Thames and sailing on the Titanic; Connie seems to have
a thing for boats. And time travel... and humor... and so much more.
Panelists will examine the various elements that make up our Guest of
Honors work, perhaps with a bit of tongue in cheek.

Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy. Jim Freund is a great moderator and speaker and Connie is always funny. If we're not careful, she'll just run away with the panel. I've been digging up Connie dirt.

Last, but not least, the BU reading on Saturday...

Broad Universe RapidFire Reading
Panelists: Oz Drummond, Kelly A. Harmon, Dina Leacock, Jean Marie
the women authors of Broad Universe serve up tasty bites of fiction...and
free chocolate!

Yes, this conflicts with the dinner hour a bit. But seriously. You need to be there or I'll be like Punxsutawney Phil and shall go back into my underground burrow for another 15 years.

Frog Out

PS: NaNoWriMo is just around the corner and yes, I'm participating. It's a chance to generate a first draft of the gen ship novella, though I'll need yet another story idea or two to make 50k. Meanwhile, MK edits continue. What's that? Bang out 50k on Anna? Hmmmm. I hadn't thought of that.

I will likely come to your Friday panels (and heckle). Or not, if you raise sufficient bribe monies between now and then.

I will be either very happy or moody/sulky, depending on how much of the last 20K of Buffalito Contingency I have done by then.

Either way, I'm looking forward to seeing you.

I have kept silent, hoping you are writing those last 20k, which I want to see.

I take it only you are coming down to Capclave? I have a room this year and I'm hoping Weatherdude will come for one of those nights.

Keeping silent is good. You can berate and nag me all weekend. I look forward to seeing you so much that I'll put up with it.

Valerie is going off to NY on Thursday for a getaway of her own. Our housemate will have the place to herself after I head south on Friday morning (I have the day off from work so I'll be arriving around noon) and will likely torment the puppy or teach him new tricks or both.
Oct. 18th, 2010 01:34 pm (UTC)
housemate? this is news you shall tell me about on Friday. I'll see what I can do to arrive early, esp. as I have no interest in Friday rush hour traffic and have 2 panels on Friday.

Meantime, I repeat, what are you doing? Yes, you're writing nonfic, but no one is paying you to comment on my blog. Oh wait. Yes, I'll have that twenty for you on Friday.

Nonfiction finished and turned in. Now I'm back at work (having finished with the DayJob for the day) on the novel for a bit, before having to zoom off to Pilates.

I look forward to that $20. See ya Friday.

I suspect I'm reading from the gen ship story. It has a good opening.

If you're going to do NaNo, then we'll do our writing in Tucson. It's the beginning of the month, so it's important to wrack up some words.

If you would like to do horse yoga, we shall do horse yoga. My knee is too dicey still for me to be willing to actually get on Pandora's back. It's strictly hugs and grooming and groundwork this time.

This BU group is a bit smaller than some, so I'll get 8 minutes. I think it's a story that breaks down well into small segments.

Ooooo! I shall have to plan on Capclave 2011 (it's too late for me to make this year). Do they have any advance info out on 2011? i'm not finding anything on the 2010 website. Thanks!

On the other hand, I've just found their blog's RSS feed, so hopefully I'll catch developments as they happen. :-)

2011 has announced the GoH: Carrie Vaughn and Catherynne Valente. It should be fun. It's a small con and it's a good one for spending time with folks.

Sorry I won't be there. The Connie panel sounds like it will be delightful!
Oct. 16th, 2010 11:26 am (UTC)
I'm sorry you won't be there, too! But then, you went to Australia! And petted a cheetah!

Sorry I won't get to see you this year! For some reason, Capclave and Irene's NJ Romance Writers Conference are now the same weekend. (Not sure whether NJRW moved a week later or Capclave moved a week earlier, but they've never been in conflict before.) And I don't want to miss lunch with Marie Severin. After all, she did draw this nifty icon of me more than 30 years ago!
Oct. 16th, 2010 11:27 am (UTC)
What a bummer. But you should, indeed, lunch with Marie Severin. It's a tradition. I think Capclave is a week later this year.
Oct. 16th, 2010 12:37 pm (UTC)
Yes, sadly, this is the fault of Capclave, and not the New Jersey Romance Writers, as last year Capclave was THIS weekend in October. I hope it slips back again next year, or I'll never make a Capclave again ... sniff!

Enjoy CapClave
I just looked up http://www.capclave.org/capclave/capclave10/ and it sounds like fun. I'm sorry I'll be missing your panels but Maryland is a little far for me. I went once on a school trip and was pleased to note you get spring much earlier there! Have fun at your reading and panels!

Re: Enjoy CapClave
It's a fun con, yes. Lots of talking about writing and reading. Lots of chances to spend time with folks.
