Just Chilling

Much, much colder today. The sun will warm up the house, but I built a fire at 8am. I have to remember to check the chickens' water dishes for ice again. For several weeks, ice was just not an issue. But it's January. So for the next 2 months or more, ice is probable. I would say it's a definite, but this is the weirdest winter.

No outings for Walkabout. Yesterday it was too windy to let them in the temporary run. Sure enough, a post blew over. But I'll put the posts back up today and let them have more space. Which means she will let herself out. Which I'm getting used to. I hope I'm still used to it when the predators figure out she's just sort of strolling around out there.

Still getting fewer eggs. About a dozen a week less. Which means they don't pile up in the fridge. This is a good thing. But it was handy to fill each carton. Now we have gaps and have to fill in with other dates to make an even dozen to sell. If it isn't one travail in my exciting life, it's another.

Time to stop bitching and go write something about the Mouse King.

Freedom Flyer

Well, it's official. Walkabout has discovered that the main run has a fence not much higher than the temporary run. And it's easier to balance on. And apparently, there is sufficient runway room for takeoff, though I would hate to be in the flight path.

I went down to get eggs and there she was in the temporary section. The gate is closed because the temporary fence is still partly down. So while she can walk in and out of the temporary section, she must take flight to get to it.

She's one heck of a chicken.
