Marine Corps Marathon

The Marine Corps Marathon will lope along very soon. Everyone is training for it and I do mean everyone. Except me, of course.

Yesterday morning, I saw a woodchuck out jogging the fenceline down by the pond. He was moving at a good clip, too. And later while the Dude was splitting wood (photos of woodpiles will be posted in due order to show our level of preparedness), he heard a great deal of commotion down in the paddock and went to investigate. Something was going on in the hedgerow between the properties.

Our hedgerows are full of mature trees like this, about 30 years old. Some choke cherry, some walnut, lots of hackberry and mulberry, some planted white pines, the occasional black locust and sycamore.

And this particular tree held a suspicious lump...a very large squirrel?

"At's a no sqvirrell! 'At's a woodchuck!"
Apparently, training takes all forms.

Well who knew they climbed trees? Apparently under enough provocation, they do. The Dude thinks our bachelor woodchuck was running another one off of this turf...possibly because it wanted to rent the brick condo under the coop. Either that, or it's just another MCM training session.

Some might argue that I was shooting him with the wrong instrument. Nice fat fall woodchuck and there he was, a right easy target. Assuming, did I have a firearm to use, that he fell out of the tree once shot. They do say woodchuck makes good eating. I'll just have to take their word for it, won't I?

And no doubt at this point mount_oregano will begin chanting "how much tree could a treechuck chuck..."
