Well, That Was Interesting And Government Shut Downs

So this was a weird weekend. Because at first my dad seemed to be so much better that he was going to be home again before I even got on a plane. So I wasn't going to go. And then that night he ate corned beef and cabbage for dinner with predictable results. Gas is also a symptom of something dire when it comes to the type of surgery he had. So he was in great discomfort and they rushed him back downtown to the hospital.

So I packed all my bags (for the umpteenth time) to go to Boston, including some tax work I could do without my main tax computer. Corporate deadlines wait for no frog. But when I got to the gate, my flight was canceled. No reason stated, just canceled. So I booked on the first flight out the next morning and went home where I spent a very nice evening indeed. I haven't seen Miss E so happy to see me since she was a toddler and stuck in daycare. I had to get up at 4am, but that's not really unknown at our house. I don't usually get up then, but Weatherdude does. I caught my plane and my cab and all of that and got to my mother's place.

And now it's Saturday night and finally the hospital says my dad can come home tomorrow. So it was useful for me to come, despite the canceled flight thing. My mom was as happy as Miss E to see me. And has been eating much better than two weeks ago and has had some really lucid moments, despite not being able to remember where my dad is. Well, she's doesn't call him my dad or her husband or even Bill. He's that nice man who usually lives with her. They get along really well, no fighting. (There are advantages to memory loss, believe me.) She's all ready to take care of him if someone will just tell her what she needs to do for him. I said 'just sit with him. He missed you.'

Oh and on another front entirely, speaking of nice men one lives with, it seems that I'm out of the loop with current events and Weatherdude has been preparing for a potential government shutdown. Amazingly enough, the IRS is nonessential. So if they do shut down, corporate deadlines will come and go and there will have to be some sort of exception. And even more shocking, Weatherdude is nonessential. A lot of NWS is essential, but not the management here at headquarters. They will be locked out of the building. Which would mean I get Weatherdude around the house for a while. I could use that. Some sort of forced vacation. The bills can go hang, there's enough in the bank to cover them. I shall get Weatherdude for hours on end. I can't remember the last time that happened. The last time the government shut down he was military and essential.

We won't talk about the fact that the government is shutting down in the middle of my busy season and I won't be able to be idle with Weatherdude. No, I shall continue to slave away. And he shall have time to nap and play with the cats and do lots and lots of outdoor yard work.

Maybe he'll have time to bury the two dead chickens sitting in a can and waiting for a thaw.
